Lions Triumph Over Girona as Serbia Welcomes New Coach

The recent loss to Montenegro at the European Championship marks the end of Tony Gerona’s tenure as Serbia’s coach.

The handball association in Serbia has arranged a meeting with the Spanish coach for today. According to “Mozzartsport,” there is absolutely no chance of continuing the collaboration, despite Gerona having a contract that runs until June.

“The last-second goal conceded and the defeat against Montenegro will make the ‘eagles’ less competitive in the play-offs for the World Cup in 2025, leading to a tougher opponent (potentially Spain). Gerona’s remaining matches are critical for the future of Serbian handball over the coming years,” the aforementioned portal reports.

Gerona took charge of the Serbian team three and a half years ago, after the squad finished in 2020th place following a disappointing performance in the Euro 20 group stage, which led to the dismissal of Nenad Peruničić.

Reports indicate that potential successors to Gerona are already being discussed, with Danijel Anđelković and Boris Rojević emerging as the top candidates.

Anđelković, a former center back for Serbia and Montenegro, currently manages Toulouse, while Rojević coaches Vojvodina, the ten-time consecutive champions of Serbia, and led them to win the EHF Cup last season.
