Red Star Secures Triumph in Piraeus
Red Star has experienced some surprising losses recently, including matches against Žalgiris and Olimpia Milano in Belgrade. However, the most astonishing result came when the “red and whites” triumphed over the Euroleague leaders.
Red Star defeated Piraeus, outclassing Olympiacos with a score of 81:73, reigniting their hopes for a playoff spot in the prestigious competition.
Initially, Red Star led by 17 points in the first half, but Olympiacos narrowed the gap to just three during the third quarter (58:55). Nevertheless, the visitors launched a blitz at the start of the final quarter, netting four three-pointers in as many attempts, courtesy of Jago dos Santos, Nemanja Nedović, and two from Ajzea Kenan. Olympiacos was unable to recover from that sudden onslaught…
Rokas Gedraitis was the standout for Red Star, scoring 20 points (with a remarkable 7 of 6 from beyond the arc, all in the first half). Cody Miller-McIntyre contributed 15 points along with 11 rebounds, while Sasha Vezenkov led the Greek side with 19 points and nine steals.
Giannis Sferopoulos’ squad was missing key players Joel Bolomboy and Luka Mitrović due to injuries, as well as Filip Petrushev, who was ineligible to play since he is on loan from Olympiacos.
Despite the defeat, the giant from Piraeus remains two victories ahead of second-placed Fenerbahçe, who fell to Monaco in the Principality with a score of 91:82.
Mike James shone for Monaco with 29 points, while Eric McCullum added 24 for Fenerbahçe.
