The International Organization for Migration (IOM) plays a crucial role as a partner for Montenegro, stated Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimović, emphasizing that enhancing border management and migration processes is vital.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ibrahimović engaged today with Arthur Erken, the IOM Director for Southeast Europe, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

The dialogue reaffirmed the ongoing and fruitful collaboration between Montenegro and the IOM in refining migration management frameworks and visa policies, highlighting the considerable impact of joint initiatives in meeting obligations from the European agenda.

Ibrahimović expressed gratitude to the IOM Office in Montenegro for its successful collaboration to date, affirming its significance as a partner in Montenegro’s European journey.

In this context, Ibrahimović stressed the need for further advancement in border management and migration flows, along with the enhancement of institutional capacities in Montenegro.

He particularly pointed out the potential of strengthening ties with the diaspora, which is viewed as a valuable asset for Montenegro’s economic growth.

Erken reiterated the IOM’s robust support for the European integration process, highlighting the organization’s commitment to providing expert assistance.

“Our aim is to assist Montenegro in achieving its primary foreign policy objectives as quickly as possible,” Erken stated.

He assessed Montenegro’s progress towards EU accession as promising, noting that advancements in migration policy have received acknowledgment.

He emphasized that the challenges related to migration and border management necessitate a comprehensive and cross-sectoral collaborative approach.

“The counterparts also shared views on current regional security challenges, collectively agreeing that there is no alternative to the European perspective for the countries of the Western Balkans,” the statement mentioned.
