Ruling Majority Puts Tourist Season at Risk

The ruling majority, through its ineffective actions and unwillingness to engage with citizens to address pressing issues, has jeopardized the tourist season, leading to ongoing protest blockades on main roadways. This was stated by Filip Adžić, vice president and MP of the Civic Movement URA.
Adžić noted that the situation began with the government’s increase in VAT for tourism from seven to 15 percent, aimed at mitigating unplanned expenditures and a budget deficit. He argued that this decision risks making prices uncompetitive compared to neighboring regions, thus threatening the tourism sector.
He further mentioned that the “bad moves continued with gimmicks” related to the announcement of beach lease tenders, leaving entrepreneurs in uncertainty due to delayed timelines and apparent corrupt practices. Consequently, many beaches remain unprepared for the season, particularly in Ulcinj.
“The Government of Montenegro has failed to plan road renovations or ensure basic connectivity between cities. Currently, we face extremely poor road conditions ahead of the tourist season, especially on the busy Budva – Tivat route. Additionally, the Mojkovac – Đurđevića Tara road has been completely blocked, isolating Dobrilovine, a popular tourist destination in Durmitor National Park, for six months. Frequent traffic disruptions are also occurring on the Berane – Bijelo Polje road due to ongoing construction,” Adžić remarked.
He indicated that despite the daily protest blockades occurring across the country, the Government and Prime Minister Milojko Spajić seem oblivious, neglecting to take these seriously or engage with citizens to find resolutions. Ongoing protests are affecting key routes, including Podgorica – Cetinje, Bar – Ulcinj, and Podgorica – Nikšić.
“It is evident that these actions will adversely impact tourism, the national economy, and Montenegro’s image abroad. Yet, no government official has met with protesting citizens to discuss their concerns. Their neglect only exacerbates the ongoing protests,” Adžić stated, emphasizing the significant threat posed to tourism along the coast, Žabljak, and Cetinje.
“While high-level government meetings focus solely on dividing political power, real issues like tourism, which is on the brink of collapse, remain unaddressed. It is clear that the current parliamentary majority needs to step aside as soon as possible,” Adžić concluded.
