The Elevation of Pavle Đurišić and Joanikije Lipovac: A Distortion of History that Undermines Montenegro’s Anti-Fascist Struggle

The Civic Movement (GP) URA firmly rejects any praise directed at figures such as Pavle Đurišić and Metropolitan Lipovac. Such remarks aim to distort history and undermine the anti-fascist legacy that forms the basis of modern Montenegro, a position we categorically denounce, as stated by the political party today.

“Pavle Đurišić, leader of the Chetnik movement, played a significant role in committing atrocities against civilians during World War II, including mass killings of the Muslim population in Sandžak, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His alliances with Italian and German occupiers, alongside the honors he received from Nazi officials, make any form of praise for his historical role unjustifiable,” the GP URA statement articulates.

In contrast, the Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral for the Serbian Orthodox Church, Joanikije, has referred to Chetnik duke Pavle Đurišić as a “great hero” of indomitable character.

The URA Border Police further emphasized that Metropolitan Joanikije Lipovac is known for his welcoming stance towards the Italian occupiers, thereby legitimizing their governance in Montenegro.

“Such actions contradict the values of freedom and resistance that Montenegrins exhibited during the National Liberation Struggle,” the statement highlighted.

According to the URA Border Guard, Montenegro was the first nation in occupied Europe to initiate an armed uprising against fascist occupiers on July 13, 1941.

“This tradition of liberty is deeply woven into the fabric of our national identity and serves as the foundation for a multiethnic and multireligious society. Glorifying collaborators of the occupiers not only disrespects the memories of fascism’s victims but also jeopardizes interethnic harmony and tolerance in Montenegro. We urge all social leaders, including those in religious capacities, to avoid rhetoric that can exacerbate divisions and create tensions among citizens. The URA civic movement remains dedicated to upholding the anti-fascist legacy, advocating for human rights, and fostering a society rooted in justice, equality, and respect for diversity,” the statement concluded.
