The reigning world handball champions, Denmark, are set to face the Olympic champions, France, for the European gold after Mikel Hansen and his teammates overcame the hosts, Germany, in Cologne with a score of 29:26 (12:14) in the second semi-final.
Similar to the first semi-final, where France dethroned Sweden in a gripping extra-time finish, there were two distinct phases of play in this match.
Initially, the Germans showcased a varied attacking approach with contributions from all positions, while only four Danish players were on the scoresheet, lacking goals from wings or pivots.
In the second half, Denmark initiated every attack without a goalkeeper and managed to prevent any goals into their empty net. Remarkably, they didn’t concede a counterattack goal, credit to Mikel Hansen’s efforts.
Consequently, France and Denmark will clash for the gold on Sunday at 17:45 in Cologne, while Germany and Sweden will compete for the bronze and the Olympic visa at 15:00. France is the host for the Olympics, while Denmark has already secured a spot as the reigning world champion.
The veteran Hansen excelled in attack, brilliantly assisting his teammates while distributing the ball flawlessly. He connected with Simon Jensen Hald four times in pivot position, successfully beating the formidable Andreas Wolf each time.
Additionally, the Danes featured a lively Emil Nielsen, who saved 42.11% of the shots, while Niklas Landin managed 25% saves.
Nielsen’s task was made easier by an impressive defense that held firm, not allowing a single goal for over five and a half minutes during the second half.
Hansen scored five goals from six attempts, while Hald netted four from four. Both Jakobsen and Pitlik finished with five goals each, and Gisdel found the net against Germany four times.
On the opposing side, Renar Uščins scored five, with Knorr contributing less than three, while Heinke and Damke netted three each.
