A ceremonial procession traversed the streets of Nikšić, marking the conclusion of the annual spiritual and cultural event “Days of Saint Basil of Ostrog,” which commenced on May 7th. This event was organized by the Diocese of Budimlje-Nikšić, the Church Municipality, and the Municipality of Nikšić.
The procession, a long-standing tradition in Nikšić since 1996, saw significant attendance from local citizens this year, despite the rain, which has often characterized the event. It was led by Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral, alongside numerous bishops, clergy, and monks.
Local government officials also participated, including the heads of the Municipality, Marko Kovačević, and the Municipal Assembly, Nemanja Vuković.
Metropolitan Joanikije and Bishop Irinej of East America delivered heartfelt sermons at the city’s Freedom Square.
This evening at 21:00, a grand fireworks display is scheduled to take place in front of the Cathedral, celebrating Saint Basil’s Day, the temple’s feast day.
Saint Basil, originally named Stojan Jovanović, was born in 1610 in the village of Mrkonjići, Herzegovina. He became a monk at the Trebinje Monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and later moved to the Ostrog Monastery after the Tvrdoš Monastery was destroyed. In 1639, he became the Metropolitan of Herzegovina. He passed away on this day in 1671, and his relics are housed in the Vavedenjski Temple at the Upper Monastery of Ostrog.
