The Serbian Military Union announced today that it is not affiliated with “any political or other group seeking to undermine the state of Serbia and its institutions.”
Recently, some media reported on a recorded conversation from an informal gathering of students and activists in Novi Sad, indicating that “the army union has reached out to us and will be ready” for tomorrow’s student protest in Belgrade.
“We do not wish to be associated with groups attempting to overthrow Serbia, incite riots, and orchestrate a violent power grab, especially with the assistance of foreign services. We are soldiers sworn to protect Serbia, prepared to give our lives if necessary for our country and its people. Our ancestors mandate this duty, as the Serbian soldier has historically defended his homeland, a legacy we all cherish,” stated the Military Union of Serbia.
They urged Professor Marija Vasić, who mentioned the “army union” in the recorded discussion, to “publicly clarify which union in the VSS intends to harm its state, attempt a coup, and disclose any affiliations with such plans, while also reporting them to the state prosecutor’s office.”
“The Serbian Army is strong, equipped, and always ready to defend its people and nation against any adversary,” added the statement from the Serbian Military Union.
