On the occasion of Voluntary Blood Donor Day in Montenegro, the most notable blood donors were recognized yesterday, including Ivica Ignjatović, Željko Rakočević, Zoran Španjević, Radosav Joković, Milutin Karadžić, Vukoman Rovčanin, Predrag Moštrokol, Miodrag Novaković, and Valentina Samardžić.

The Ministry of Health presented these individuals with awards for their efforts in promoting voluntary blood donation over the past year.

The Red Cross organized the Voluntary Blood Donors Day, with DDK Cagliari and DDK Plužine being highlighted as the most proactive donor clubs.

Dr. Dragan Gazivoda and transfusion specialist Danijela Mihaljević received accolades for their expertise in transfusion medicine. Additionally, awards were given to Dejan Macanović from Nikšić, Milan Franović from Kotor, and Goran Božović from Tivat for their educational and motivational contributions. The ‘Dr Simo Milošević…’ Institute was also honored, as announced by the Red Cross.

The director of the Blood Transfusion Institute, Marina Sekulić, noted that 22,000 units of blood were collected last year.

“Every donation is a symbol of support for those in need. Thanks to your dedication, numerous lives have been saved. You’re not just helping; you’re inspiring a more compassionate and responsible society,” Sekulić stated.

Ognjen Delić, the director of the Directorate for Health Care, expressed that the awardees form “the foundation essential for the health system’s functionality.”

“I also want to emphasize the critical role of the Blood Transfusion Institute, which ensures the smooth operation of the transfusion service by providing safe blood. The Red Cross of Montenegro plays a vital role through organized activities and public awareness campaigns in the promotion of voluntary blood donation. Our focus moving forward is to enhance the level of voluntary blood donation, a collective effort we must intensify,” he added.

Red Cross President Mitar Vučković described blood donation as “one of the highest forms of human solidarity.”

“It transcends distinctions and asks for nothing in return, offering the most precious gift—the opportunity for life. Continuous state support for ensuring safe blood supplies is crucial, especially in times of crisis and emergencies,” he stated.
