Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced today that the Serbian Army and the “Cobra” military police unit do not possess a sound cannon, which some alleged was deployed during the protest in Belgrade on Saturday. He revealed that an investigation into those spreading such false claims will be concluded within the next 48 hours.
“We will finalize the investigation entirely within 48 hours, and all individuals responsible for these fabrications will face justice,” Vučić stated in a video message shared on Instagram.
He further explained that no sound cannon was present in the streets, asserting that it would have been impossible for it to go unnoticed.
“The Army and the Cobras do not have a sound cannon. There is absolutely no sound cannon in the Serbian Army,” Vučić emphasized, clarifying that what some mistook for a sound cannon was actually an anti-drone rifle held by the Cobras near the Presidency building.
The Serbian President also noted that there were no reports of anyone feeling ill on the day of the protest, claiming that “they sent their activists the following day.”
He drew parallels to the disinformation spread during the Ukrainian “Maidan” protests.
“You might recall the accusations against Yanukovych for allegedly bringing in snipers to shoot at the populace… Similarly, they are proclaiming that Vučić is shooting at the people… Another malicious lie designed to destabilize Serbia,” Vučić said.
He expressed pride in how the nation has maintained peace and stability amid various attempts to sow discord. He added that lies had also been spread about potential attacks from participants from the camp in Pionirski Park, claims that roads would be blocked in Belgrade, and insinuations that the government would cut off internet and social networks.
Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić commented today that the Extended Rector’s Board of the University of Belgrade released a statement yesterday “condemning the claim of a non-existent sound cannon and holding those responsible for disturbing the public and spreading fake news in a bid to ignite further attempts to revive a color revolution.”
“Following the failed color revolution on March 15, the University of Belgrade continues to incite panic with their press release, and accountability is necessary,” Brnabić told TV Pink.
She stated, “There is not a shred of truth in the claim about the sound cannon; it is quite evidently false information.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if someone claimed Aleksandar Vučić discovered Godzilla in the Japanese mountains and secretly transported it to unleash on the student protesters,” Brnabić said.
She stressed the importance of the system functioning, asserting that the situation cannot continue for another four months, and emphasized the role of the Serbian Parliament in enforcing the law.
“The entire nation can no longer overlook the fact that the Law on Higher Education and the Law on Student Organizations are being flouted, violating the Constitution. The Constitution does not seem to apply to them; the rector, the deans—they operate above the state, the Constitution, the law, as if they are above God-given authority, disregarding the National Assembly, the Government, and the president who won 2.3 million votes,” Brnabić concluded.
