Montenegro, as a reliable member of NATO, is dedicated to upholding the values and objectives of the Alliance through active mission participation, policy implementation, and the promotion of peace, dialogue, and collaboration.
This statement was made by Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, during his meeting today with NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Šekerinska.
According to the President’s Office, Milatović emphasized that Montenegro has initiated its largest military modernization effort since regaining independence. He noted that over 30 percent of the defense budget for 2024 has been earmarked for modernization, with more than two percent allocated for the current year.
Milatović pointed out that the ongoing visits by senior NATO officials and the enhancement of political dialogue are essential for the stability of the Western Balkans. He expressed his appreciation for Secretary General Mark Rutte’s recent visit to the region and anticipated his upcoming visit to Montenegro.
It was also reported that Milatović remarked that Šekerinska’s high-ranking appointment within the Alliance signifies the growing importance of the region for Europe’s overall stability and security.
“The European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the region must be bolstered. In this regard, robust and sustained support from NATO and the EU for the reform process, regional security, and overall development is vital for the resilience and advancement of Western Balkan nations. The Alliance has played a pivotal role in contributing to stability and reforms in the region through its operational involvement and open-door policy,” Milatović stated.
He reiterated Montenegro’s commitment to a fair, comprehensive, and sustainable peace in Ukraine, supporting initiatives aimed at initiating negotiations, including efforts from American and European allies.
Milatović recalled Montenegro’s backing of all NATO measures to safeguard allies and reinforce deterrence and defense policies on the eastern flank. He highlighted Montenegro’s ongoing contribution to battle groups in the east through the deployment of Montenegrin Army members in Latvia, Bulgaria, and Romania.
The two officials convened ahead of the NATO Youth Summit in Budva, which is being organized in Montenegro for the first time at Milatović’s initiative.
Sekerinska stated that the Alliance appreciates Montenegro’s role in the region, noting that hosting the NATO Youth Summit is a significant achievement for both the nation and NATO. She added that Montenegro hosting this event sends a strong message about the region’s importance to NATO.
The summit, which unites over 400 participants from member states and partner nations, serves as a critical platform for enhancing NATO’s visibility among youth.
