Seven Years Without Justice for Olivera Lakić

The Center for Civic Education (CCE) has noted that it has been seven years since the attempted assassination of journalist Olivera Lakić, yet the case remains unresolved.

The organization expresses concern over the repeated delays in the trial, emphasizing that this not only extends the pursuit of justice but also diminishes the feeling of safety for journalists in Montenegro.

“Despite the attempt on her life, Lakić has continued to uphold high professional standards in journalism, tackling some of the most perilous and sensitive issues. Her resolute commitment and bravery serve as an example for all journalists and a prompt for institutional action,” stated the CCE.

They highlighted that each new postponement sends a troubling signal that assaults on journalists may be tolerated and escape accountability, which further erodes the already fragile trust in the judicial system.

They insist that media freedom must be ensured—not merely in theory but through effective and prompt judicial actions.

“This case also serves as a benchmark for the rule of law and the important Chapters 23 and 24 concerning Montenegro’s EU accession process. The CCE urges relevant institutions to expedite the proceedings and reach a conclusive resolution, rather than allowing decades of uncertainty,” the NGO remarked.
