After enduring 17 consecutive losses, the Mornar basketball team finally celebrated a victory in the AdmiralBet ABA League yesterday, defeating Krka in Bar with a score of 78:70 during the 25th round.
This marks Mornar’s second win in the regional league; however, they remain in a challenging position with two fewer wins than Krka and Cibona, alongside a poorer head-to-head record against both teams.
“We finally reached this day. It’s a bit of dark humor, but it’s true. After such a tough season, to say the least, this victory comes a bit late. Every win counts, especially given our circumstances. I’m really happy for the players and I wholeheartedly congratulate them,” stated Mornar’s coach, Mihailo Pavićević, following the match.
Pavićević had to cope without Jamari Smith for the game.
“The fewer players we have, the better we perform. Earlier today, I received a message from Smith saying his knee was bothering him, preventing him from playing. We lost another player, yet the team gave their all and perhaps exceeded their limits. The younger players showed tremendous effort, allowing us to elevate our defensive game, which ultimately led us to victory,” said the Mornar coach.
Despite the tough situation, the Barani maintain hope for a turnaround.
“There are five more rounds left, and we refuse to give up. Hope is the last thing to fade. I’m pleased that we’ve played two consecutive games very effectively, making mostly smart choices. Everyone played their part, especially Rogić, who intelligently directed the offense,” emphasized Pavićević.
Mornar’s remaining games are against FMP, Dubai, Zadar, Split, and Igokea.
