The SC Derby basketball team is currently enjoying a three-game winning streak in the AdmiralBet ABA League. Following victories over Mornar and Split, the “students” triumphed over Igokea with a score of 25:111 in Podgorica yesterday during the 109th round.
In their second consecutive game, the young Podgorica squad surpassed the 100-point mark, claiming their 10th win of the season. Their safety for the season has been secured, but SC Derbi remains two wins behind Zadar, Mega, FMP, and Spartak, who are all vying for playoff positions. With five rounds remaining, Petar Mijović’s team faces a challenging schedule ahead, playing against Buducnost Voli, Crvena zvezda, Cedevita-Olimpija, Mega, and Borac from Čačak.
“As we anticipated, Igokea is a highly competitive team, as evidenced by their performance in the league to date. They have made comebacks from significant deficits on the road, and we knew if we didn’t perform to our maximum for all 40 minutes, we could encounter difficulties. I believe we played excellent basketball for 31-32 minutes, moving the ball well, with patiently constructed plays, and managed a high scoring percentage, which was encouraging,” coach Petar Mijović remarked after the match.
He specifically acknowledged the contributions of visiting player Bryce Jones.
“In the second half, the individual talent of Bryce Jones was their team’s biggest advantage. He managed to create defensive mismatches for us, executing numerous positive plays for both himself and the team. Their shooting improved noticeably in the second half,” Mijović stated.
Mijović opined that his team had a chance to clinch the win in regulation.
“I believe this victory showcases our character. We could have secured it in regular time, with a technical foul and an offensive rebound contributing to the circumstances. Nevertheless, during overtime, we played as if it were the start of the game again. We made numerous shots, both from set plays and quality chances. Zoki Nikolić displayed exceptional effort under the basket, converting missed shot opportunities into offensive rebounds and new attacks. We affirmed our strong form against a solid team and rightfully celebrated,” Mijović added.
