Celebrating Europe Day and the Triumph over Fascism Day

Ažurirano: 09.05.2025. 20:01h

On May 9, we celebrate Europe Day and the Victory over Fascism Day, with heartfelt congratulations from officials, public figures, and political parties.

Radojević: The enduring legacy of our heroes will be cherished through generations

The President of SOBNOR of Montenegro, Radojica Radojević, commemorated Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day, highlighting the date as a tribute to countless civilians and soldiers who lost their lives fighting for liberation across Europe, Montenegro, and our city.

“This day signifies the remarkable triumph of the anti-Hitler coalition over the greatest evil in human history – fascism. May 9th stands as a testament to the courage and unity of those who fought against fascism, as we remember all who sacrificed their lives for the values that define humanity,” he stated.

Radojević noted that our people and country were part of the brave and honorable front, affirming that we take pride in Montenegro’s contribution to the anti-fascist coalition and its role in the larger victory over Nazism.

“Motivated by an unwavering commitment to defend their oppressed homeland, our fighters delivered relentless blows to the common enemy beginning in 1941. Their immortal acts will forever resonate in the hearts of our citizens and the generations to follow. The esteemed sons and daughters of Montenegro gave their lives to demonstrate what it means to love one’s nation. Our current freedom is a tribute to their courage, and we owe them our sincerest gratitude,” concluded Radojević.

European Union: Anti-fascism is a contemporary necessity, not just a historical principle

The European Union celebrated Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day, reaffirming its commitment to the principles of anti-fascism, freedom, equality, and solidarity, which guide us toward a more equitable society and a promising European future.

“On this significant date of May 9th, we reflect on the historic victories that shaped modern Europe—free, democratic, and united in its diversity,” the EU stated.

“Today is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by millions who stood against the darkest ideology of the 20th century, fascism, and of our collective responsibility to uphold freedom, justice, and the dignity inherent to every individual,” continued the EU statement.

The coalition emphasized that as a non-partisan entity rooted in anti-fascism, solidarity, and European unity, it stands firmly with those who laid down their lives for freedom and the right of all peoples to live in peace.

“Anti-fascism today is a living, necessary principle, especially in light of the prevalent hate speech, the glorification of dark ideologies, and the threat to democracy. It is imperative we defend the achievements of civilization and the civic ideals of Montenegro,” concluded the statement.

The EU delegation also laid a wreath at the Monument to the Partisan Fighter in Gorica in honor of May 9, Victory over Fascism Day.

Odžić: In times of anti-fascism challenges, this date holds even greater significance

“On this day in 1942, national hero Ljubo Čupić was executed. His legacy cannot be ignored in history books or tales of resistance. His image has transcended borders, his smile remains etched in the hearts of generations. Without that smile, our narratives would lose a vital chapter of defiance against mortality,” remarked Petar Odžić, deputy president of the SDP and EU representative.

“As anti-fascism faces trials, particularly when right-wing politicians, along with religious fanatics, equate fascists and Chetniks with liberators and patriots, the importance of this date becomes even more profound,” he elaborated.

Odžić emphasized that our forebears perished to clarify the distinction between good and evil.

“Rivers of blood flowed to defeat fascism. The five-pointed star and the cockade represent opposing ideals. We must remember our legacy, our current identity, and the future we wish for our children. Happy Victory Day—death to fascism, freedom to the people,” he declared.

Pejović: A chance to reaffirm our dedication to European unity

“On this May 9th, in celebration of Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day, I extend heartfelt congratulations to all citizens of Montenegro on behalf of the Parliament,” said Boris Pejović, Vice President of the Parliament.

This day serves as a reminder of the pivotal fight for freedom, peace, and human dignity, as well as the vision for a unified Europe based on democratic values, solidarity, and cooperation among states and peoples, Pejović stressed.

“Montenegro’s Parliament remains firmly committed to our country’s European trajectory and strives to enhance the legislative framework in alignment with European standards for the benefit of all citizens. May 9th should inspire us to renew our commitment to European unity and to collectively work towards establishing a modern, stable, and European Montenegro,” said the Deputy Speaker.

Today, he honored the occasion by laying a wreath at the monument to the Partisan fighter on Gorica Hill.

Jakić: Montenegro stood firm on the right side of history

The President of the Municipality of Šavnik, Jugoslav Jakić, issued a congratulatory message for the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism and Europe Day.

“On this date, we reflect with pride on the heroism of generations who fought against fascism to secure freedom and lay the groundwork for the modern values we uphold today—freedom, justice, and democracy. Montenegro was firmly on the right side of history during that conflict,” Jakić stated.

Furthermore, he noted, Europe Day signifies the importance of solidarity, togetherness, and peace.

“Our European future is not merely a strategic goal, but a logical next step towards respecting human rights and ensuring justice and equality. By maintaining our commitment to anti-fascist values and diligently pursuing European integration, I am confident we will build a state that serves the needs of every citizen—a contemporary, inclusive, and prosperous Montenegro,” he concluded.

Popović: Montenegro’s commitment to the European path remains unshakeable

Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Zdenka Popović extended her congratulations on May 9, Victory Day over Fascism and Europe Day.

“We take pride in commemorating the valiant anti-fascist struggle of Montenegro’s people on this day. The flicker of freedom ignited on July 13, 1941, blossomed into a blazing resistance that peaked with the victory over fascism on May 9, 1945, illuminating Europe. Today, we honor all those who dedicated their lives to the ideals of freedom and justice, creating the foundations for our future. Among them is Ljubo Čupić, a paragon of resilience, courage, and faith in freedom, who departed this world smiling, leaving behind a lasting legacy of dignity and resistance. These heroes belong not only to Montenegro, but to all of humanity,” said Popović.

He further noted that May 9th also symbolizes Europe Day—a day of peace, unity, and common values shared with the peoples of Europe.

“Montenegro, unwaveringly committed to the European path, continues its efforts to build an environment rooted in freedom, rule of law, and a dedication to combating crime and corruption. As a country already embracing European values, we are on the cusp of becoming the first new member of the European Union,” Popović stated.

Jovanović: We must work towards a future of peace, stability, and prosperity

“In an age where democratic values across the globe are once again under scrutiny, we must solemnly remember those who sacrificed their lives for freedom, justice, and peace. Let this day serve as encouragement for each of us to contribute to the formation of an open and equitable society anchored in dialogue and mutual respect for diversity. By persistently cultivating the European spirit of solidarity and cooperation, we can overcome contemporary challenges and ensure a future founded on peace, stability, and prosperity,” expressed Jovanović.

Bečić: Montenegro affirms its strategic commitment to the European path

Deputy Prime Minister Aleksa Bečić congratulated everyone on May 9—Victory Day over Fascism and Europe Day.

“Today, we honor the legacy of our ancestors, who led the uprising in July 1941, among the very first in occupied Europe to rise against fascism. Their courage, defiance, and unwavering belief in freedom crafted Montenegro into a foundation for victory against totalitarianism, which continues to define our identity. Simultaneously, we acknowledge the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which laid the groundwork for today’s European Union—a beacon of peace, unity, and collective progress,” Bečić asserted.

Today’s EU reflects the values woven into Montenegro’s social and political fabric—freedom, democracy, solidarity, the rule of law, and respect for human dignity.

“With significant strides made in our negotiation process and a positive IBAR assessment, Montenegro reaffirms its strategic commitment to the European path. We are not constructing borders but building bridges—within our nation and with our European allies, resolutely implementing comprehensive reforms. I am confident we will remain a trustworthy partner and leader in European integration within the region, mindful of both the responsibilities of our past and our obligations to future generations,” he added.

Ćulafić: We must build an eco-sustainable future grounded in solidarity

Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Northern Development, Damjan Ćulafić congratulated on May 9—Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day.

“This day not only commemorates the historical struggle of our ancestors for peace but emphasizes our contemporary duty to uphold that peace through responsible stewardship of nature. In the face of climatic challenges, solidarity and unity must be our guiding principles towards a greener, more equitable future,” specified Ćulafić.

He noted that Montenegro boasts exceptional natural resources, biodiversity, and ecosystems that must be conserved for future generations.

“The Ministry is committed to enhancing awareness surrounding sustainable development and environmental conservation through concrete policies, education, and partnerships with citizens, local communities, and European and global partners. Let this date remind us to foster a society that prioritizes ecological responsibility, solidarity, and care for our planet as fundamental values,” said Ćulafić.

Ibrahimović congratulates on May 9

Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the Bosniak Party, Ervin Ibrahimović expressed congratulations for May 9, Europe Day, and Victory over Fascism Day.

May 9, commemorating Victory over Fascism and Europe Day, provides an opportunity to remember the sacrifices made by our ancestors in the fight against one of the greatest evils of modern times—fascism. It’s a time to reflect on the importance of building a better, more just society and the duty to oppose regressive ideologies. Just as May 9, 1950, along with the Schuman Declaration, marked the beginning of a united Europe, so too must today remind politicians in the Western Balkans to forge a path towards progress, peace, and stability rooted in solidarity, anti-fascism, and equality.

He added that Montenegro finds itself in the concluding phase of its European integration journey and must reaffirm its commitment to pursuing a prosperous future aligned with European values.

“Progressive forces in Montenegro must collaborate to guide our society toward EU membership, striving for a prosperous and advanced community founded on the principles of peace, solidarity, and equality. This aspiration is shared by the majority of Montenegrin citizens and is a goal that all political entities in Montenegro profess to pursue,” Ibrahimović stated.

Camaj: This May 9th, Montenegro approaches Europe more closely than ever

Vice President of the Parliament of Montenegro Nikola Camaj congratulated the EU Ambassador to Montenegro, John Sattler, and the citizens of Montenegro on May 9.

“On May 9th, Montenegro stands closer to Europe than it ever has since the initiation of EU accession negotiations. We have all contributed to this collective achievement, including the ruling majority, which steadfastly maintains the course towards EU integration amid challenges. We owe our gratitude to the citizens who have consistently supported our EU goals, as well as our EU partners and neighbors, whose assistance is invaluable. Furthermore, your personal effort, Mr. Sattler, has been pivotal in ensuring that Montenegro’s progress toward EU membership remains vigorous. I believe that Montenegro today can proudly assert its priority commitment to uphold and implement European values, fulfilling the necessary tasks for EU membership, making our goal of EU integration both attainable and expedient,” said Camaj.

Bogdanović: Modern states must uphold truth

The leader of the Democratic Party’s parliamentary group and Secretary General, Boris Bogdanović, remarked that 80 years ago, Europe was liberated on this day.

“The concept of hatred being in control of the continent was also overturned. The future has been redeemed by those who recognized that freedom is both a choice and a responsibility. Therefore, as we commemorate Europe Day today, we celebrate a continent that has risen from the ashes to uphold the most profound idea of our age: that no difference justifies war, human dignity transcends politics, and peace is not merely assumed but actively forged,” Bogdanović stated.

He emphasized that Montenegro remains steadfast in its respect for this legacy.

“We remember the heroes who rose against fascism—the partisans, the camp inmates, those executed and persecuted. We recall the moment we aligned with humanity over power. As peoples who made significant contributions to the anti-fascist struggle and stand today alongside European values, we affirm: there is no modern state without truth, just as there is no Europe if we overlook its importance in times of turmoil,” concluded Nenezić.

Nenezić: Today, anti-fascist values are more threatened in Montenegro than ever

Branislav Nenezić, President of the Municipal Assembly of Bar, conveyed his salutations for May 9, marking Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day.

“This day offers yet another moment to honor our ancestors’ glorious and liberating tradition, who were on the right side of history on May 9, 1945, standing with the progressive forces of humanity. They sacrificed their lives and youth for the society we belong to today, which should embody values of solidarity, mutual respect, and appreciation for the individuality of all Montenegrin citizens. Their legacy will continue to inspire our quest for Montenegro to join a contemporary, developed, and anti-fascist European Union, and for our society to mature in readiness for that crucial step,” Nenezić expressed.

He cautioned, “We must be realistic and openly acknowledge that never before have anti-fascist values been as imperiled in Montenegro as they are today.”

“Fascism, as humanity’s plague, has adapted, with its modern ‘troubadours’ donning diverse uniforms but sharing a common goal—to blur the lines between victim and perpetrator, facilitating the resurgence of defeated ideologies in our civil society. We must recognize that we cannot compromise with those who promote historical revisionism regarding Montenegro’s struggles; their messages of peace are insincere—mere cloaks for the dangerous ideologies they harbor. We should not forget those who seek political gain while remaining silent or only mildly critical; they should be reminded that the only requirement for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing,” he warned.

Borovinić Bojović: Now more than ever, we must uphold the vision of a united Europe and lasting peace

Jelena Borovinić Bojović, President of the Capital City Assembly, conveyed her congratulations on May 9th.

“This date encompasses two critical messages: the victory in the struggle for freedom, justice, and human dignity; and the vision of a modern Europe characterized by unity, peace, and mutual understanding among its peoples. Victory Day serves as a perpetual reminder of the victims who fell fighting for anti-fascism and human dignity—values that are the bedrock of a modern and democratic Europe. Meanwhile, Europe Day signifies our collective aspiration for a common future defined by the rule of law, equality, and reverence for diversity,” stated Borovinić Bojović.

In these challenging times, she asserted, it is imperative to remain steadfastly committed to the idea of a unified Europe and enduring peace.

“It is our duty to preserve the legacy of freedom and build a community that honors our anti-fascist past while actively pursuing European integration and democratic values. The promising prospect of our EU membership exemplifies that we are on the right track,” she concluded.

Joković: The SNP remains steadfast in its anti-fascist heritage

Vladimir Joković, President of the Socialist People’s Party (SNP), congratulated everyone on May 9—Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day.

“This important date reminds us of the heroic struggle of the peoples of Europe, including Montenegrins, against fascism and oppression, emphasizing our ongoing commitment to peace, freedom, and unity among nations. Europe Day symbolizes solidarity, togetherness, and the European journey that Montenegro is resolutely pursuing. In these times of global trials, it is more critical than ever for us to unite in safeguarding democratic values and human dignity. The SNP remains true to its anti-fascist roots and committed to Montenegro’s European future, dedicated to the reforms and advancements necessary for our country’s progress,” emphasized Joković.

SEP: Advocating for European progress and a secure future

In celebration of May 9—Europe Day, the Party of European Progress (SEP) also shared its congratulations.

“This pivotal day affirms the core values upon which the European project was founded—peace, solidarity, unity, and the vision for a diverse yet united continent. In light of the current security and social threats facing Europe, the significance of Schuman’s vision is ever more pronounced. His clarion call for Europe to be founded upon solidarity in action resonates deeply today,” the SEP stated.

The party firmly believes in nurturing Montenegro’s rightful place within the European family.

“Our vision is clear: Montenegro’s European advancement translates to enhanced safety and security, greater justice, stronger institutions, and a brighter legacy for our children. This is the path we will boldly pursue, as we see Europe not merely as a geographical entity, but as a community of free, secure, and responsible societies—societies to which Montenegro holds its rightful claim,” the announcement concluded.

Duke: The value of this day is immeasurable.

Minister of Public Administration, Marash Dukaj, extended his congratulations on Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day.

“Today, we celebrate both Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day with immense pride. The importance of this day is immeasurable—rooted in the sacrifices of our ancestors for peace, tolerance, and prosperity, as well as in our dedication to living within developed democracies. May today inspire us to honor our ancestors’ sacrifices and maintain our focus on fulfilling our obligations under the European agenda. Our shared commitment to building democratic institutions, upholding human rights, and enhancing mutual respect should be our unwavering objective. Montenegro must retain the essence of true values and become an integral member of the grand European family where it belongs,” emphasized Dukaj.
