Hungary has long been a powerhouse in water polo, demonstrated by the numerous trophies it has secured over the decades. This January, once again, the depth of talent in Zolt Varga’s squad is evident.

The current world champions’ coach expertly managed two significant tournaments in just a month by guiding a revitalized team to the European Championship (where they reached the semi-finals). This means he now has refreshed superstars available for the World Cup in Doha, along with emerging talents who excelled in Zagreb.

Last night, Varga revealed the roster of 15 players who will represent Hungary at the World Championship. The lineup features veterans and world champions such as Gergo Zalanki, Kristian Manherc, Marton Vamos, Denes Varga, Shoma Vogel, and Daniel Angal.

Alongside these experienced players, the standout athletes from the recent Euros will also head to Qatar—remarkable talents like Vince Vigvari, Gergo Fekete, Zoltan Pol, Adam Nagy, and David Tatrai. All except Tatrai were part of the golden squad that triumphed last summer in Fukuoka.

“In our selection process, we chose players in optimal form, as well as those who align best with our strategy,” Varga stated, as reported by the Waterpolo.hu portal.

The World Cup in Doha will hold special significance for “senator” Denes Varga, making his tenth appearance at world championships.

Hungary will face Italy, Romania, and Kazakhstan in its group, which will later compete with the group that includes Montenegro, the USA, Serbia, and Japan.

The World Cup starts on February 5, and Hungary has already secured an Olympic qualification for Paris.
