Montenegrin boxer Strahinja Mrdak secured a gold medal, while Matija Roganović concluded his run at the Heydar Aliyev International Tournament in Baku with a silver medal.

Mrdak triumphed over the skilled Kazakh, Edige Hurgohz, in the finals of the 50-kilogram category.

The match was highly competitive, but the boxer from Bjelopolje, representing BK Budva, showcased dominance in critical rounds, earning a well-deserved victory.

“He demonstrated exceptional technique, fighting spirit, determination, and composure during crucial moments. Throughout the tournament, he made a significant impression, achieving impressive victories over opponents from reputable boxing nations, thereby affirming his status as one of the most promising young boxers both regionally and internationally,” the Boxing Federation stated.

On his path to the final, Mrdak eliminated Georgian Dimitri Beraj in the round of 16, followed by Uzbekistan’s Zhavokhir Govmidinov in the quarterfinals, and Russian boxer Mikhail Sharipov in the semifinals.

Although Roganović did not secure a win in the final of the 80 kg category, he exhibited remarkable fighting spirit, technical skill, and resilience.

The BK Nikšić member faced off against one of today’s most talented young boxers, the Russian Astemir Karaev, in the pursuit of gold.

The match was intense from the start.

Karaev leveraged his speed and accurate strikes, while Roganović countered with a solid guard and counterattacks, maintaining tactical discipline.

As the bout progressed, Karaev upped the intensity, but Roganović stood firm, responding with combinations that showcased his physical fitness and mental fortitude.

“Even though the judges declared the Russian boxer the winner, Roganović left the ring with his head held high, winning the crowd’s admiration and the respect of experts. His overall performance throughout the Baku tournament was commendable,” the statement highlighted.

In Baku, Roganović advanced by defeating Kazakhstan’s Adil Medelkahanan in the round of 16, Azerbaijan’s Elvin Ahmadli in the quarterfinals, and Uzbekistan’s Umarjov Nazarov in the semifinals.

“With their performances in Baku, Mrdak and Roganović have reaffirmed their presence at the pinnacle of the global stage, indicating promising successes ahead. Alongside the boxers’ achievements, Montenegrin boxing was also effectively represented in Baku by international referee Blažo Jabučanin, who officiated during all phases of the tournament, including the final,” the Boxing Federation announced.
