Interior Minister Ivica Dačić informed the “Danas” portal that the police possess sonic weapons, commonly referred to as “sonic cannons.” These systems were acquired in 2021 and are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior.

According to reports from Danas, Dačić revealed last night that these systems remain in storage, unopened, indicating that they belong to the Ministry of Internal Affairs but have yet to be deployed or installed on any vehicle or system.

When questioned about his previous statement claiming that the Ministry of Interior does not have a “sonic cannon” or any similar sonic weaponry, the minister acknowledged it was an awkward remark.

“That was a clumsy statement. What I meant was that the Ministry of Interior has not incorporated this tool into its range of coercive measures,” Dačić explained to “Danas.”

In response to why the state “purchased” such systems in advance when their deployment isn’t permitted, Dačić termed it a misplaced investment.

“At that time, it was likely anticipated that new legislation regarding police powers would be enacted, allowing for the use of sound weapons as an alternative means of coercion,” he added.
