Van Dijk pens new deal with the “Reds”

Despite numerous offers, the captain remained steadfast in his desire to continue leading Liverpool. Now, it’s official: Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract with the future champions of England.

“It’s always been just Liverpool,” the Anfield club declared, confirming a new two-year contract for the player who has become an emblem of the Reds.

According to David Ornstein from The Athletic, there is no release clause or salary reduction in the new deal, allowing the 33-year-old centre-back to maintain a reported weekly salary of around £400.

“This still secures his position as the highest-paid defender in Europe. Though other clubs expressed interest, his sole focus was Liverpool,” Ornstein noted.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool in January 2018, quickly becoming a pivotal figure in securing a series of triumphs for the club over the ensuing years.

He has clinched every possible title in the red jersey, including the 2019 Champions League and the 2020 Premier League trophy, which the club had been chasing for 30 years. He is now just two victories away from another title, which he will hold aloft as captain.

Recently, Liverpool also extended the contract of another team leader, Mohamed Salah, while Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract is set to expire, is anticipated to move to Real Madrid.
