Combating Corruption: Essential for Regional Development

The Deputy Prime Minister for Political System, Justice and Anti-Corruption, Momo Koprivica, delivered a lecture and engaged in an open discussion with a group of postgraduate students from esteemed Harvard University. These students are visiting Montenegro as part of the Balkan Trek study programme. Master’s and PhD candidates from 17 different countries are exploring the Western Balkans to gain insights into the region’s political, economic, and social dynamics.

Koprivica meeting with Harvard postgraduates

In his remarks, Koprivica underscored Montenegro’s steadfast dedication to establishing a state governed by the rule of law, fighting against corruption, and reinforcing institutions as the bedrock of a stable and democratic society.

Corruption does not appear out of nowhere – it stems from individual choices. Our objective is to eradicate the conditions that allow corruption to thrive through robust institutions and responsible leadership. As we progress towards European Union membership, we strive to be a positive role model for other nations in the region aspiring to join the EU, said Koprivica.

He further stressed the significance of engaging in dialogue with emerging global leaders and the importance of exchanging ideas that can foster greater democratization and sustainable development in the region.

The students showed a strong interest in the current judicial reforms, anti-corruption strategies, as well as the challenges and opportunities linked to Montenegro’s European integration efforts.

This lecture was facilitated with the support of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development, as part of collaborative initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development, the rule of law, and international cooperation.
