The “sharks” may not be in optimal condition, but they achieved their first mini-goal in Doha by defeating Japan (13:11), securing a spot in the World Championship playoffs.

“Our aim was to advance from the group stage. We’ll see whether we finish second or third,” stated coach Vladimir Gojković post-match.

The “sharks'” position in the quarterfinals and their Olympic qualification will hinge on the outcome of the Serbia vs. USA match today at 15:30. A Serbian victory would place Montenegro in second place, likely against Romania in the playoffs, while an American win would set them up to face Italy.

“It was a very challenging match that determined our continuation in the tournament – we must prepare for what lies ahead in two days,” Gojković added.

This World Championship follows closely on the heels of the European Championship held in Croatia just twenty days ago.

“I want to congratulate the players; it has been a lot of pressure. The groups in Dubrovnik, Zagreb, and here have been intense, not allowing for a single game at a lower intensity, so the preparation went well,” Gojković concluded.
