The company “Genasys”, known for making LRAD devices, often referred to as “sonic cannons”, has stated that available evidence does not indicate these devices were deployed during the protests in Belgrade on March 15th.

“The video and audio evidence available so far does not support the use of LRAD during the March 15 incident in Belgrade,” the company reported.

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić remarked that this evidence challenges all the claims and manipulation surrounding the event, affirming that the so-called sound cannon was not utilized at the rally in Belgrade.

According to Dačić’s statement released by the ministry, “This was corroborated by U.S. manufacturer ‘Genasys’, from whom the Ministry of the Interior acquired the devices in 2021. They firmly stated that the video and audio recordings they received do not corroborate the use of LRAD, or the so-called sound cannon, at the rally on March 15th.”

However, the company also referenced a statement from the international NGO “Earshot,” which noted that the recordings contained sounds indicative of a Vortex Ring Gun, or Vortex cannon.

On March 17, Earshot announced via social media that activists from Serbia had approached them the day before to investigate the potential deployment of sonic weapons by the government during a 15-minute silence to honor the victims of the canopy collapse in Novi Sad.

“Earshot reviewed 12 videos capturing moments when weapons were allegedly utilized against protesters. Four of these videos exhibited audio consistent with the sounds generated by a Vortex Ring Gun or Vortex cannon,” the organization explained.

This weapon, as detailed by the experts at Earshot, expels gas from its cylinder at speeds nearing 300 km/h, creating a howling sound akin to a jet engine and producing vortex rings that can be ionized.

“This could generate electromagnetic interference with devices such as hearing aids, corroborating witness reports from the protest,” Earshot stated.

If it was indeed a Vortex cannon, the footage obtained was recorded at a distance of at least 700 meters from its source, according to Earshot.

“At that range, the weapon’s combustion cannot be heard; only the specific whistle of the pressure wave is audible as it moves away from the firing point toward the crowd, inciting mass panic,” the organization remarked.

At approximately 19:00, while a large number of citizens were silently commemorating the victims of the Novi Sad incident during the protest in Belgrade, individuals gathered on King Milan Street abruptly fled from the roadway, reportedly in reaction to intense and unusual sounds and vibrations.

Currently, there is no official information available to explain the cause of such a response.

Post-protest, witnesses recounted experiences of loud noises, body vibrations, and some reported sensations resembling heat strokes.

Additionally, numerous accounts of health issues arose in the days following the protests.

Four days after the protest, government officials initially claimed the police in Serbia did not possess a “sound cannon”, only to subsequently acknowledge that they did have one but insisted that it was “not used”.

Concerns regarding the potential usage of such a device during the protest in Belgrade have been raised by students participating in the blockade, segments of the opposition, and various non-governmental organizations dedicated to human rights protection.
