Vučević Urges Vance to Involve the US in the “Sonic Cannon” Investigation

The outgoing Serbian Prime Minister, Miloš Vučević, revealed that he has sent a letter to US Vice President JD Vance. In the letter, he discussed the US potentially investigating allegations regarding the supposed use of a “sonic cannon” during the protests in Belgrade on March 15.

In an Instagram update on March 20, Vučević commented, “I supported President Aleksandar Vučić’s call for US investigative authorities to look into the false claims by opposition media about the use of a ‘sonic cannon’ or similar devices during the unregistered protest on March 15.”

Vučević expressed gratitude to Vance for the support the American people have extended to Serbs during pivotal historical moments, including both world wars and beyond.

“I also reminded the esteemed Vice President of the rich cultural relationship between our nations and emphasized the Serbian leadership’s commitment to fostering new chapters in Serbian-American relations,” Vučević shared.

Just a day prior, Vučević disclosed that he had reached out to both the FBI and the Russian Security Service (FSB) for independent inquiries into the alleged usage of a sound cannon during the protest.

He reiterated the position of Serbian authorities: “No ‘sound cannon’ or any similar device was employed on March 15 at any location.”

Earlier, the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) announced that Minister Ivica Dačić had extended an invitation to FBI Director Kash Patel, requesting assistance in analyzing the use of sound-emitting devices.

Top officials asserted that neither the police nor military had access to a “sound cannon,” confirming it “could not have been used” during the mass protest in Belgrade.

Four days post-protest, Dačić acknowledged that the Ministry of Interior did possess “LRAD-450XL” and “LRAD-100X” devices, known as “sound cannons,” but stated these were exclusively for warnings or conveying sound messages during large gatherings.

Officials countered claims from the international NGO “Earshot,” which suggested, based on video and audio analyses from the March 15 protests, that the sound generated by the Vortex Ring Gun, or Vortex cannon, was audible.

During a silent tribute in Belgrade for the victims of the Novi Sad tragedy, many participants on King Milan Street abruptly fled the street, describing intense and unusual sounds and vibrations.

No official explanation has been provided for this reaction.

Post-protest, witnesses reported experiencing loud noises, bodily vibrations, and some mentioned feeling overheated.

Numerous accounts of health issues have surfaced in the aftermath of the protests.

In the meantime, the First Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade stated that no state institutions utilized the so-called “sound cannon” during the March 15 protest.

Students participating in a blockade, demanding accountability for the collapse of a concrete canopy in Novi Sad, accused the authorities of deploying a sound cannon during a 15-minute silence commemorating the 15 fatalities.

Several opposition parties and NGOs have echoed these accusations.

The “sonic cannon” is categorized among non-lethal weapons employed for police and military purposes—such as riot control, deterrence, or long-distance communication.

According to the 2020 United Nations guidelines, while these weapon types aim to minimize the risk of fatalities compared to traditional firearms, their deployment still poses a risk of serious injury or death.
