A Singular Instance of Self-Nomination for Government Without Public Backing

Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić stated that the opposition’s proposal for a government of popular trust is an unprecedented case globally, where “someone proposes themselves as the government without the people’s support and without electoral mandate.”

The President of the People’s Movement, Miroslav Aleksić, announced earlier today that the parliamentary opposition is officially demanding the establishment of a transitional government, referred to as a “Government of People’s Trust.”

In response to the opposition during a press conference, Brnabić remarked that they are evading any moves that suggest consulting the public, including both elections and referendums.

“They are arrogant. They came and proclaimed that they are the government from now on. No referendum will take place, and we will not permit it. We will not allow any question concerning the people, they wish to install themselves,” Brnabić highlighted, according to RTS reports.

The Assembly President inquired about the foundation of the demands for a government of popular trust and under which Constitution such claims are made.

“The query for all citizens is on what basis, according to which law, or Constitution, is this being proposed? This is not only unconstitutional but goes against the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia. What laws justify your request?” Brnabić asserted.

“Following this conference, given that we received an ultimatum to form a Đilas government, I had to address the matter. Forget everything you have heard. A fixed-term government is a Đilas government, which would lead Serbia back to an era of plunder and decline—this is the reason certain millionaires are so fiercely advocating for a Đilas government,” Brnabić stated.

She questioned if the opposition expects the populace’s trust after the tractors belonging to hosts were destroyed in Pioneer Park simply because they were brought to protect the lives of students seeking education, while facing daily insult from those who throw eggs at them and refer to their children as “babies.”

“You attempted to set the National Assembly ablaze ten days ago, nearly injuring three women and an unborn child, do you truly believe the people will support you? The same people you have deceived with tales of a sonic cannon for four days?” Brnabić queried.

She continued, stating that opposition members cannot even agree on their seating arrangements in Parliament, yet they readily find common ground when it comes to violently seizing power.

“I find it intriguing that they possess a consensus across the entire opposition. These individuals can’t come to an agreement on where they will be seated in the benches of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. Yet, when it comes to sharing power, taking power by force, and installing themselves without the people’s consent, elections, or adherence to the Constitution and law, they swiftly harmonize and reach a consensus within just two hours,” Brnabić asserted.

Regarding student demands

In reference to the claims from opposition representatives that an interim government would address student demands, Brnabić noted that they did not support the bill to place the fourth student demand on the Parliament’s agenda.

“When it came to setting the agenda, they tried to ignite the National Assembly so that the demand would remain unfulfilled. Their concern for the students’ demands is evident. They desire Đilas to form his government once again by leveraging those students in the blockade,” Brnabić commented.

She pointed out that two of the students’ demands fall under the judiciary’s jurisdiction and questioned opposition members if they intended to usurp the judiciary.

“What have you communicated to us now? That you wish to usurp the judiciary? It is the same tactic they employed from 2001 to 2012. During that time, they usurped the judiciary,” Brnabić remarked.

She asked why the opposition representatives labeled their solution as a “government of popular trust” while simultaneously misleading the public with the claim of a sonic cannon.
