A match that embodies the essence of football—offensive plays with minimal defense and an abundance of goals. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have showcased the most exhilarating performances in Europe this year, leaving few teams with answers to their explosive football. But can Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa alter the narrative?
The German powerhouse and current European runners-up are set to face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, while Unai Emery’s squad welcomes Paris Saint-Germain. Kickoff for both matches is at 21:00.
Although the team that reached last season’s final may not be considered an underdog, Barcelona’s impressive display this season positions them as the favorites.
FLIK: DORTMUND PLAYS ATTACKINGLY TOO
The upcoming face-off between Barcelona and Borussia will be captivating from a coaching standpoint, especially since Hansi Flick was an assistant to Niko Kovac at Bayern Munich during the 2018/19 season. Flick has since surpassed Kovac, winning the Champions League and coaching Germany. His familiarity with teams from his homeland means he knows there can be no complacency against a team like Borussia, even if they haven’t been in top form this season.
– They might not have had the best results lately, but Borussia is an extremely consistent squad that also plays an attacking style. It’s unfortunate they’ve faced numerous injuries, the latest being Niko Schlotterbeck, but I know they have sufficient depth to cover for them,” said Flick.
Furthermore, Dortmund has proven able to handle Spanish sides, winning four of their last five encounters against La Liga teams in knockout rounds, including a victory over Atletico last year.
– We’re up against a different kind of challenge than we face in the Bundesliga, as we’re playing one of Europe’s best. We must be defensively impeccable, and I believe we can achieve that,” emphasized Kovac.
Barcelona remains undefeated in 2025 and has a solid record against Borussia in UEFA competitions.
RASHFORD HAS ALREADY CRUSHED PARIS TWICE
The second match of the night may not have the same buzz as the clash between Barcelona and Borussia, but the face-off between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa promises exciting football.
This match will see a tactical battle between Spanish coaches, Luis Enrique and Unai Emery. Moreover, Aston Villa’s striker Marcus Rashford holds a special history with PSG, having eliminated them twice while with Manchester United.
First in 2019, when he scored a penalty in the 87th minute to knock out PSG in the round of 16, and then two seasons later during the group stage, sealing a victory for the “Red Devils” in the dying moments.
This match also marks a return for Emery to a club he once managed, with a striker Marco Asensio playing for the rival side.
“I had a great experience here for two years, and it’s wonderful to return, especially with Aston Villa in the Champions League quarter-finals,” said Emery.
Fans are eager for another stellar performance from Paris Saint-Germain similar to their round of 16 display against Liverpool.
– Aston Villa, like us, is rich in versatile players. It’s challenging to predict who will feature, especially after their strong winter transfer window. We can expect an open and tough contest for both teams,” believes Luis Enrique.
