We’re Anticipating Mercy from 20 of Them
Students at the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Belgrade, announced they blocked the City Transport Company (GSP) depot in New Belgrade last night at 3:00 AM.
In a statement on social media, they declared that the blockade of the depot will remain “in effect until further notice.”
They added, “Several so-called ‘verified’ and ‘reliable’ reports regarding last night’s events have surfaced in various media outlets, which we will not name. It appears that false information has been disseminated,” according to the students.
Meanwhile, students from the Faculty of Agriculture have also urged citizens to participate in the blockade via Instagram, emphasizing that it will continue indefinitely.
“We are gathering to support our teachers in their fight for improved working conditions. Join us,” they encouraged.
Photos shared on social media show dozens of student supporters stationed outside the GSP depot, with one notable visitor being former Serbian national basketball player Vladimir Štimac.
Radio and Television of Serbia report that the blockade has caused the suspension of all tram services and 16 bus lines, leading to approximately 280 public transport vehicles not operating in Belgrade.
No tram services are available, nor are bus lines 9A, 17, 24, 40, 58, 60, 60L, 67, 68, 71, 75, 76, 77, 83, 85, and 87A.
As confirmed by GSP dispatcher Jovica Jovanović to Radio Belgrade, lines 17, 58, 67, 68, 71, 75, 77, and 83, along with tram services, have not been operational since early morning.
The Secretariat for Public Transport has stated that the blockade has disrupted regular operations for lines 2, 5, 6, 7L, 9L, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 9A, 17, 24, 40, 58, 60, 60L, 67, 68, 71, 75, 76, 77, 83, 85, and 87A.
Lines 27, 27E, 37, and 95 are running with fewer vehicles than usual from other facilities.
Šapić Condemns the Blockade
Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Šapić remarked that more than 280 vehicles from the City Transport Company were unable to operate this morning because “around 20 individuals decided to halt them.”
“As I have previously stated, anarchy disrupts order and creates a situation where anything can happen without accountability,” said Šapić according to the City of Belgrade website.
He further noted that the police have been informed and encouraged Belgraders to “patiently” await the resolution of the blockade by the 20 protestors.
“Let our new reality be one of happiness,” the mayor concluded, according to the website.
GSP reported that a group of approximately twenty students from the Faculty of Agriculture, along with some citizens, have blocked two of their facilities, which resulted in 150 buses and 130 trams not being put into service this morning.
According to GSP, “Access to the Novi Beograd bus depot and the Centrala tram depot is blocked.”
