Svetlana Broz, a renowned cardiologist, has passed away in Belgrade at the age of 70.
She was a distinguished advocate for human rights, the author of the influential book “Good People in a Time of Evil,” which has seen seven editions and has been translated into six languages. Broz also wrote “I Have Courage,” “The Righteous of Rwanda Between Oblivion and Reconciliation,” “The Gojer Galaxy,” and “My,” and she co-authored numerous works in peace studies. As the founder and director of the NGO “Gariwo” in Sarajevo, she was one of the pioneers in Europe in promoting civic courage through public lectures, Schools of Civic Courage, and a publishing initiative that produced over 60 books. She established the “Duško Kondor” award for civic courage and has created more than 40 documentary films highlighting its recipients.
Broz lectured at 52 universities across the United States and 80 in Europe.
She was honored as an honorary citizen of Tuzla (BiH) and received multiple awards, including the National Order of Merit of France, L’Ambrogino d’Oro, and La Bussola dell’Educazione “Margherita Zoebeli” of Italy. Additionally, she was recognized as Righteous in the World Park of the Righteous in Milan.
The cremation will be held on March 26th at 14:15 at the New Cemetery in Belgrade.
