Securing an Official Opinion Would Establish Consensus for the Agreement with the UAE
The President of the Democratic People’s Party (DNP), Milan Knežević, stated that securing an official opinion from our European partners will lay the groundwork for achieving a consensus in the Montenegrin parliament regarding the agreement between Montenegro and the United Arab Emirates.
Knežević made these comments in a letter addressed to EU Enlargement Commissioner Marti Kos, which was sent via the EU Delegation to Montenegro.
He expressed concern that the agreement has generated “a series of questions, doubts, and controversies” among the Montenegrin public, which could potentially impact our relationship with the EU.
“Dear Commissioner, I truly value your support and commitment to assist Montenegro on its path to the EU, as our shared objective is EU membership. I am reaching out to request the European Commission’s help in clarifying these uncertainties, which could negatively influence our integration efforts. Recently, an intergovernmental investment agreement was signed between Montenegro and the United Arab Emirates, raising various questions and issues among the Montenegrin populace, which may affect our EU partnership. Given previous remarks from European officials, including the latest by Ms. Kaja Kalas emphasizing the need for equal conditions for all investors in Montenegro, receiving an official opinion from the EC regarding this agreement is crucial for us,” Knežević remarked.
He believes that Commissioner Kos understands the importance of this communication and sees it as a demonstration of “genuine European commitment to advancing our progress in EU processes.”
“Thus, I find it vital to address any uncertainties related to the mentioned agreement, which we fear might hinder our European aspirations. Remaining steadfast in our commitment to a European future and striving for general consensus, please accept my sincere respect and gratitude,” the DNP leader concluded.
