Emiliano Martinez and Aston Villa: Remembering Matija
Aston Villa marked Matija Šarkić’s legacy as his first club in England, following his arrival from Anderlecht. Since the tragic passing of the Montenegrin goalkeeper this summer, the club has repeatedly demonstrated profound respect for him.
The “Lions” commenced their Premier League derby against Nottingham Forest at 6:30 p.m., with goalkeepers, led by the outstanding Emiliano Martinez, donning T-shirts that featured the message:
“Forever Matija,” proudly displayed on the T-shirts worn by Villa’s goalkeepers during their warm-up prior to facing the “foresters.”
This tribute at Villa Park aligns with the memorial tournament held yesterday and today in Brussels to honor Matija Šarkić.
The event features under-13 teams from clubs where Matija played, alongside guest teams from Belgium.
Participating clubs include Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Millwall, and Anderlecht, where he began his career, plus guests Antwerp, Standard Liege, and Leuven.
Matija Šarkić tragically passed away on June 15, 2024, at the young age of 27, shortly after a remarkable match for Montenegro against Belgium in “his” Brussels.
