Ulm: The Greatest Challenge, Paris: The Ultimate Dream

Flying from Podgorica, with a stopover in Warsaw, the “lionesses” are set to arrive in Ulm around 22:00 tonight. There are only two paths from this historic city on the Danube—one leads to Paris and the Olympic Games, while the other would mean a return home and a summer devoid of the biggest sporting event.

The moment has arrived; it’s time for the most critical three matches since Tokyo 2021. The Montenegrin handball team will kick off their Olympic qualification against Paraguay tomorrow evening (Thursday, 20:15). The competitors in Ulm will include Germany and Slovenia, with the top two teams securing their spots in France.

“We’ve been waiting for four years, so the stakes couldn’t be higher—this might be the biggest challenge yet,” said Tatjana Brnović, Montenegro’s pivot and one of the world’s premier handball players.

“This is the ultimate test and a shared dream for all of us. The qualifications will be tough; it’s a big fight, but our hunger to reach Paris is immense, and we believe we can achieve that,” added Ivona Pavićević, the left winger for the “lionesses”.

When the Olympic Games are on the line, there are no easy opponents. However, the initial matchup against Paraguay is anticipated to be just a “warm-up” for the decisive clashes against Germany and Slovenia over the weekend.

The difference between Montenegro and Paraguay was evident during their recent World Cup encounter, where the girls coached by Bojana Popović enjoyed a comfortable training session (41:26).

“Germany is likely the tournament favorite due to being the host, while Slovenia is undoubtedly a strong team, just like us,” Ivona pointed out.

The Lionesses have faith in their abilities, but they understand that no one will hand them a ticket to Paris in Ulm.

“I anticipate a fierce battle. Our immense desire should be our key strength, visible on the court. We want to demonstrate why we came and achieve our goal,” expressed Tatjana Brnović.

The winger from Montenegro shares similar sentiments.

“We face formidable opponents, but we are armed with great energy, determination, and desire. I believe we will succeed in Ulm,” added Ivona Pavićević.

A pivotal clash will be against Slovenia, guided by the legendary Montenegrin coach Dragan Adzic, who led the “lionesses” to the only Olympic medal in Montenegro’s history 12 years ago.

“Everyone in our national team knows Slovenia well, having played many sparring matches with them. They are not strangers to us. Itana Grbić and I are there, which gives us additional insight. Neither side will surprise the other,” Tanja noted, with Ivona adding.

“We are well-acquainted, and the team that wants it more in that moment will surely emerge victorious. It’s the Olympic Games; everyone will give their all.”

What should be Montenegro’s advantage on the path to Paris?

“Strength, determination, and faith in our efforts,” Tatjana Brnović emphasized.

“Character,” stated Ivona Pavićević.
