Gunfire erupted at my apartment in Niš late Saturday night.

Dragan Milić, a physician from Niš and founder of an opposition citizens’ group, reported that gunshots were fired at his apartment in Niš, Serbia, during the night between Saturday and Sunday.

While speaking to N1 television, Milić recounted that he was asleep when he heard the noise, initially believing it to be a stone hitting his window.

“Upon investigation, I noticed the hole was round, resembling a bullet’s entry point, which forensic experts later confirmed,” Milić stated.

He mentioned that police conducted a “thorough” investigation.

“The inquiry lasted around six or seven hours, and they established that the shots originated from a house across the street,” Milić explained.

Milić further described the incident as an attempted murder during a statement given in Niš on the same day.

Initially, he was unaware that a bullet had damaged his bedroom window, mistakenly attributing it to a stone thrown during protests the previous Friday.

“I shared images with friends who are retired forensic specialists. They examined it and advised me to alert the police immediately, as it appeared to be the result of a projectile,” Milić recounted.

He indicated that the police conducted a detailed examination, even recreating the scene from the vantage point of the opposing house.

“They used a laser through my window to pinpoint the location of the bullet hole in my bedroom. The laser aimed straight at the pillow, indicating that the shooter had precise aim and trajectory,” Milić noted.

The thick glass and window frame, he added, ultimately prevented more severe consequences, as the bullet did not completely pass through the window.

Milić believes this assassination attempt reflects the tense atmosphere within society.

“With individuals from local and national media, as well as prominent officials, using inflammatory language to label others as ‘the main evil,’ ‘Trojan horse,’ ‘traitor,’ or ‘CIA doctor,’ it’s understandable that someone might decide to take extreme measures, thinking: ‘I will remove this evil, this traitor, and then Niš will be free,’” Milić emphasized.

He urged everyone to act rationally and reiterated that despite this attack, he will not alter his political stance.

“I forgive the shooter, and may God forgive him as well. I hold no animosity, but this serves as a warning that our country is heading in the wrong direction and that urgent change is needed to secure a better future for our children,” Milić stressed.

Niš Police Department: Previous Damage to Milić’s Apartment Window

The Niš Police Department released a statement regarding Dr. Dragan Milić’s report of alleged projectile damage to his window, revealing that while gathering information from the shop owner below Milić’s apartment, they found two similar prior incidents of damage to the shop’s window.

The statement noted that the restaurant owner “did not report the damage to the police” but instead repaired it on his own in January.

The police continue to take necessary measures at the request of the prosecutor’s office to clarify the circumstances of this event, the statement added.

Prosecution: Potential Bullet Hole in Milić’s Bedroom Window

The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Niš stated today that “there is a probability” the damage to Dr. Dragan Milić’s window was caused by a projectile – a bullet.

“During the investigation led by the Basic Public Prosecutor on duty in Niš, in collaboration with the Niš Police Department, it was found that the bedroom window had a hole and that a similar damage occurred on the shop window below, likely caused by a projectile,” the Prosecutor’s Office revealed, announcing further investigation.

Ministry of Interior: Immediate Investigation Conducted

Following Dr. Dragan Milić’s report of gunfire at his apartment, the Niš police quickly initiated an on-site investigation and are diligently working to ascertain all facts and circumstances surrounding the incident, as stated by the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP).

The statement indicated that police officers “immediately” arrived at the scene upon Milić’s report and identified damage to both his apartment window and the shop window below.

“The investigation lasted several hours and was carried out by the prosecutor from the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Niš in collaboration with the police. At the prosecutor’s request, the police are actively working to uncover all pertinent facts and details of this incident,” the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs stated.
