With the match against Paraguay behind them, the Montenegrin handball players secured a victory over a weaker team at the Olympic Games qualification kickoff, though they find themselves trailing the “lionesses” by a narrow 60 minutes at the start of the Ulm competition.
The outcome was a 30:25 win, marking the sole positive from a challenging opener against an opponent that posed significant hurdles for Bojana Popović’s squad with their unique style of play.
Now, two crucial matches lie ahead, with their first challenge being Germany, who established themselves as favorites by defeating Slovenia 31:25 in the opening round.
Germany is favored again today at 14:15, but Montenegro is primed for a fierce contest and eager to demonstrate their capabilities against a formidable rival, as noted by pivot Bobana Klikovac.
– Germany is a strong, determined team, and every player deserves respect. Their lineup boasts talented wings, backs, goalkeepers, and pivots, making them solid in all positions. I anticipate a tough match; we need to prepare thoroughly and maintain composure in our attack, which will be crucial for our success. Additionally, a robust defense is essential – mentioned Bobana Klikovac.
A win would bring Montenegro closer to the Olympic Games, where the top two teams from the qualifying tournament will advance.
– We are highly aware of the significance of a victory; these are the matches of our lives. Each of us dreams of attending the Olympic Games – some for the first time, while others for the fourth time – added Bobana, who looks forward to a packed arena against the hosts:
– Playing in front of a large audience is always enjoyable. It’s a boost for us, just as it is for the Germans. I hope we receive ample support; it would mean a lot – emphasized Klikovac.
She also reflected on the match against Paraguay, describing it as a “land mine”:
– The most important takeaway is that we won and came through unscathed. We need to address the mistakes we made during that game, particularly in our offensive plays.
Winger Nina Bulatović wasn’t shocked by Germany’s performance against Slovenia.
– I can’t say we were surprised by Germany’s first-round showing. During our preparations, we honed in on the German and Slovenian players – we understand their capabilities and individual strengths. Germany is a formidable team, with strength across all positions, but we grasp the stakes and know what we must achieve – stated Bulatović.
The Germans’ defensive prowess lies with players like Ksenia Smits, Alina Greisels, Emily Belk, and Julia Maidhof.
– Germany has outstanding defenders, but I believe we can counter them with a strong defense. With a solid defensive strategy, we can hold our own against the opponent – asserted Dijana Mugoša, who scored nine goals from 11 attempts against Paraguay.
