Support for Female Journalists Relies on Active Involvement from Media Outlets, Journalist Organizations, and Civil Society

A recent death threat against “Vijesti” journalist Jelena Jovanović highlights the numerous challenges faced by female journalists in Montenegro. In addition to the typical pressures from influential entities and uncertain field conditions, these journalists endure physical assaults, sexist remarks, online harassment, and direct threats of violence. This was stated today by Maja Nikolić, program manager of the Association for Responsible and Sustainable Development (UZOR).

“The safety of female journalists, particularly those involved in investigative reporting, relies not only on legal protections and state institutions but also on proactive involvement from media organizations, journalistic bodies, and civil society,” Nikolić emphasized in her statement.

Jelena Jovanović reported to the police a death threat she received yesterday from a woman who identified herself as Milica Ćuk.

This woman, claiming to be Milica Ćuk, the sister of Serbian national Milovan Ćuk, who was expelled the previous day, called the “Vijesti” newsroom around 6:20 PM, stating, “If anyone suffers consequences because of the article, it will be the author’s head that rolls.”

The article in question was published earlier that day, with Jovanović as the author.

She took action by informing the police after a coworker from the portal relayed the threat.
