Slovenia is celebrating its handball team – the squad, coached by Montenegrin Dragan Adžić, is the first women’s national team from Slovenia to participate in team sports at the Olympic Games.

The Slovenian women made history in a direct clash against Montenegro, dominating the match for the entire 60 minutes, earning their spot at the Olympic opening ceremony in Paris on July 26.

“Since Dragan Adžić took over as coach, he has opened our eyes and instilled a belief in our potential,” praised Slovenian goalkeeper Amra Pandžić, recognizing the coach who previously made history with Montenegro 12 years ago.

Known as “lionesses,” Montenegrin handball players have left a mark, and Nataša Ljepoja believes it was her teammates and herself who shined in Ulm.

“We fought like lionesses and proved it on the field… We might not fully grasp the importance of our achievement yet; perhaps the tears in our eyes during the final moments of the game express it best,” Ljepoja remarked, as shared by RTV Slovenia.

In 2012, Dragan Adžić secured Montenegro’s only Olympic medal, and now he’s crafting a historic Olympic tale with Slovenia. Local media highlight that he remained grounded despite the victory and remind everyone of his silver medal achievement with Montenegro in London.

“We maintained control of the game for 60 minutes, even in challenging situations – this speaks to the exceptional stability of this team. In every crucial match since my arrival, these girls have performed remarkably,” Adžić stated.

Slovenia’s Historic Success Celebrated Today

The Slovenian handball players have made history as the first women’s team from the country to qualify for the Olympic Games, yet their historic moments were not accessible to viewers on television.

As reported by “Delo,” Slovenia aims to rectify this oversight by welcoming the heroes from Ulm at Jože Pučnik Airport today.
