Spanish Prosecutors to Challenge Dani Alves’ Acquittal

Spanish prosecutors announced today their intention to appeal the recent acquittal of Brazilian football star Dani Alves, who faced rape allegations.

This development follows an appeals court’s decision to overturn the conviction that a lower court had imposed on Alves after a trial last year.

Alves had spent 14 months in prison after being arrested in December 2022 for allegedly assaulting a young girl in a nightclub restroom in Barcelona.

The Brazilian athlete has consistently denied the accusations.

Initially found guilty in February 2024, Alves was sentenced to four years and six months behind bars.

The case may escalate to the Supreme Court in Madrid if a decision is taken to reassess Alves’ acquittal.

At age 41, Alves is among the most celebrated players in football history, having won 42 titles throughout his career, including three Champions League trophies with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil. His most significant achievements came during his time at Barcelona, where he secured 23 trophies from 2008 to 2016.
