Weiler-Bab: The Top Defender in Euroleague

Nick Weiler-Bab, a player for Bayern Munich, was awarded the title of EuroLeague’s Best Defensive Player for the 2024/25 season today.
According to the Euroleague website, “Weiler-Bab’s tremendous energy, versatility, and exceptional outside defense were his standout qualities, aiding Bayern in reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2022. He has established himself as a defensive cornerstone and a vocal leader, consistently taking on the toughest assignments while effectively containing the best outside shooters of the opposition. His capacity to defend multiple positions, paired with elite anticipation and physicality, has made him vital to Bayern’s defensive strategy.”
The selection for this award was made by the coaches of the teams participating in the Euroleague this season.
The Bayern point guard led the Euroleague in steals this season, with an average of 1.6 per game (totaling 52), in addition to being the top rebounder among players at point guard or guard positions with 4.2 rebounds per game.
Second in the voting for best defender was Real Madrid center Valter Tavares, a three-time recipient of this accolade.
Monaco’s Alpha Diallo secured third place, followed by Panathinaikos defender Jerian Grant in fourth, while last season’s award winner, Olympiacos playmaker Thomas Vocap, finished fifth.
Votes were also cast for Red Star center Joel Bolomboy, Zalgiris wing Arnas Butkevicius, Virtus point guard Alessandro Payola, and Asvel wing Andre Roberson.
The record for most Best Defender awards belongs to former Panathinaikos point guard Dimitris Diamantidis, who has claimed the honor six times.
