The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is on the lookout for a new national team manager following the termination of Dorival Junior’s contract. They are reportedly trying to recruit Carlo Ancelotti, currently with Real Madrid, or Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, according to Brazilian media sources.
Dorival was dismissed late last night after a tenure of 14 months, primarily due to unsatisfactory results.
The decision came just three days after Brazil suffered a heavy 4-1 loss to Argentina, marking their worst defeat in World Cup qualifying history.
Brazilian football officials have been pursuing Ancelotti, who recently renewed his contract with Real Madrid. Reports from UOL indicate that Guardiola is also a point of interest, though his recruitment is considered virtually “impossible.”
On Friday, Ancelotti refuted claims of discussions with CBF representatives, emphasizing that he remains committed to Real Madrid until the end of the 2026 season.
Other potential candidates include Jorge Jesus of Al Hilal, Abel Ferreira of Palmeiras, and Flamengo’s coach, Filipe Luis.
Guardiola has expressed interest in managing a national team before the end of his career.
His contract with Manchester City runs until the summer of 2027, and he has consistently stated that he will not leave the club despite recent poor performances.
Currently, Brazil sits in fifth place in the South American World Cup qualifying standings, with the top six teams securing direct entry to the tournament, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.
Brazil’s World Cup qualifying matches will resume on June 4th, facing Ecuador.
