DPM Momo Koprivica Holds Meeting with ECHR President Marko Bošnjak

The Deputy Prime Minister for Political System, Justice, and Anti-Corruption Momo Koprivica visited the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, where he met with the Court’s President Marko Bošnjak. The meeting also included Vice-President Ivana Jelić and Registrar Marialena Tsirli.

During their cordial and constructive dialogue, they discussed key issues related to the rule of law, human rights protection, and the significance of effectively implementing the Court’s judgments within the Council of Europe member states. Special attention was given to the challenges Montenegro faces in the realm of European integration and judicial reform.

Deputy Prime Minister Koprivica emphasized the Montenegrin government’s firm dedication to enhancing the legal framework, boosting institutional efforts against corruption, and elevating human rights standards in alignment with the practices and values upheld by the Court in Strasbourg.

He specifically noted that Montenegro is fully committed to executing the Court’s judgments and views them not as actions against the state, but as vital legal instruments promoting the interests of the nation and its citizens. He highlighted that the government has undertaken all necessary measures to ensure the timely implementation of the Court’s decisions. This commitment is evidenced by a compensation payment of EUR 6.2 million to former employees of “Radoje Dakić,” alongside decisions to compensate an additional 1,500 former employees, as well as workers from “IMO Košuta” in Cetinje, “KAP,” and the Nikšić Bauxite Mine.

President Bošnjak praised Montenegro’s ongoing initiatives to bolster institutional capacity and its willingness to engage in constructive dialogues with international judicial entities. He noted that continued collaboration with the European Court is crucial for Montenegro’s further advancements toward full EU membership.

The meeting also discussed the significance of judicial independence in protecting fundamental rights, the necessity of judicial transparency, and the imperative to enhance public trust in justice system institutions.

This visit represents a significant step in fortifying international cooperation concerning the rule of law and reaffirms Montenegro’s commitment to European values and principles that are the foundation of modern democratic systems.
