Are Serbia’s Protests Prompting the EU to Respond?
Following a meeting between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with European Council President Antonio Costa, Brussels strongly suggested that Vucic heed the requests put forth by the ongoing protests in Serbia.
“The country must commit to EU reforms, particularly by taking significant actions towards media freedom, tackling corruption, and reforming the electoral process. Serbia’s future is within the EU,” von der Leyen noted on X.
In recent months, European Union officials have faced criticism for not voicing support for the student-led protests advocating for legal integrity and against governmental corruption—principles that are supposedly fundamental to the EU’s values.
