Trebinje’s Mayor Mirko Ćurić addressed a press conference today, discussing the incident where his vehicle was attacked with stones in Nikšić. He stated that this reflects poorly, but he sees it as the action of an individual.
“This atmosphere has been partly fostered by remarks from certain politicians. Recently, I was informed that an MP from the Democratic Party of Socialists mentioned that some voters from Republika Srpska, Trebinje, and Herzegovina might be misusing their voting rights,” Ćurić noted. He added that besides the Trebinje city vehicles, several others were vandalized, with some even being set on fire, which paints a negative picture, as reported by RTRS.
He emphasized that he promotes positive and brotherly relations.
“We are aware that similar incidents have occurred before, but there was a period of reduced interaction between the institutions of Trebinje and Nikšić. However, since we established our twinning, we consider each other brothers and sisters. Many residents of Nikšić, Montenegrins, visit Trebinje on weekends. This incident is a statement from a few individuals and should not be viewed as an attack on the property of Trebinje residents, but rather as an expression of dissent,” explained Ćurić.
He reiterated that the aggression came from individuals rather than a collective targeting of Trebinje.
“There were license plates from Zeta among those damaged as well, so let this serve as a reminder. We are fostering stronger connections and have no reason to feel ashamed or find fault within ourselves, but instead, we should focus on the actions of those individuals who took it upon themselves,” the mayor remarked.
When questioned about the presence of the city’s official vehicle at a political rally in Nikšić and whether he met with the municipality president Marko Kovačević the previous day, Ćurić was vague in his response, according to RTCG. He acknowledged their meetings, stating there was nothing to be ashamed of.
He added that a driver was present in the vehicle during the incident and expressed confidence that the case would be resolved.
“The police directed us to park there. Everything was in order until someone decided to act otherwise. The police have taken statements, and I believe the offenders will be identified, especially since witnesses saw and described them. There is video surveillance on that street. It wasn’t just our vehicle; we suspect an organized effort targeting vehicles bearing our license plates,” explained Ćurić.
He conveyed a welcoming message to the people of Nikšić and all good-hearted individuals, encouraging them to visit Trebinje and Republika Srpska.
“This approach will help us progress and develop local communities throughout the area, and potentially even those closest to us,” concluded Ćurić.
