Romania Confronts Political Turmoil as Right-Wing Voters React to Candidate Ban

Sorin Bunea (a pseudonym) is still contemplating how to spend Romania’s longest weekend of the year, spanning four days from Thursday, May 1, to Sunday, May 4.

For the past several years, this 43-year-old employee of a public energy company has taken his family to the Greek coast on May 1, a public holiday in Romania that celebrates Labour Day, to kick off the summer season.

“I’m uncertain about making the trip this year since May 4 coincides with the first round of the presidential elections,” he mentioned.
