Montenegro and Latvia face similar issues within their healthcare systems, and enhancing joint efforts in specific areas is vital for both nations, as announced during a meeting between Health Minister Vojislav Šimun and his Latvian counterpart Hossams Abu Meri.

Minister Šimun is leading a delegation from the Ministry of Health on an official visit to Latvia, where they will attend a high-level conference tomorrow.

The Montenegrin Ministry of Health revealed that Šimun and Abu Meri addressed the common challenges encountered by smaller countries.

They stressed the significance of collaboration and establishing actionable strategies, taking into account their unique experiences and the particular health sectors where joint efforts could be beneficial.

Šimun highlighted the growing importance of cooperation in drug procurement among small nations.

Abu Meri expressed appreciation for Montenegro's progress on its European path and conveyed Latvia's support, also showing interest in participating in a potential project, noting that medicine procurement remains a challenge in Latvia as well.

The meeting explored various modalities and projects for medicine procurement, both through European Union (EU) mechanisms and the Small Countries Initiative, to which both Montenegro and Latvia belong, as stated in the announcement.

Šimun outlined the government's priorities concerning healthcare system investments, while Abu Meri shared Latvia's experiences in organizing primary healthcare and implementing preventive programs, particularly in screening for colorectal, cervical, and lung cancers.

The ministry indicated that Abu Meri expressed a willingness to potentially include Montenegro in a project coordinated by Latvia, which involves 22 countries, 20 of which are EU members.

The project has a funding value of 30 million euros, aiming for the early detection of abdominal and lung cancers, with Latvia agreeing to provide Montenegro with lung cancer protocols post-project completion.

Šimun thanked his Latvian counterpart, affirming Montenegro's interest in joining the project.

The two parties also addressed shared issues regarding the shortage of medical personnel and discussed strategies to incentivize the work of doctors in rural and remote areas, along with experiences in recognizing professional qualifications for medical staff from non-EU countries.

They agreed that an official memorandum of cooperation would be signed during their visit to Latvia, according to the statement.

The Montenegrin delegation comprises, besides Šimun, State Secretary of the Ministry of Health Milena Cojić and Head of the Directorate for International Cooperation Mirjana Đuranović.
