The swimming water polo club Budućnost has reported that a group of hooligans attacked several of their younger category members near the city swimming pools in Podgorica, resulting in serious injuries to one of the players.
According to Budućnost, the incident occurred yesterday (Tuesday) after the young water polo players had completed their training session.
The club stated, “They were approached and assaulted by a group of unidentified individuals, wearing masks and armed with machetes and baseball bats.”
They further noted that the injured athlete is a promising young talent and a representative of Montenegro in the younger categories.
“He earned a silver medal at last year’s European Championship held in Podgorica, is a scholarship recipient from the Ministry of Sports and Youth, and embodies all the traits of a top athlete – he is calm, well-mannered, loyal, hardworking, a good friend, and an exemplary student,” the club from Podgorica emphasized.
In their statement, Budućnost urged the media to report broadly on the incident to encourage society to take a stand against any form of aggressive behavior aimed at harming others, whether mentally or physically.
“We must establish guidelines and support systems to protect against violence. Let us not ponder whether our children are surrounded by bullies attempting to exert control over them. This type of physical violence can potentially devastate sports, education, or any career. We must not allow violence to derail the positive paths our children are on,” they stressed.
The club also mentioned that the incident has been reported to law enforcement.
“We are hopeful that those responsible will be identified and face the consequences as dictated by the law.”
