Every Bit of Change Matters
“The availability of drinking water is diminishing globally. The residents of Nikšić are fortunate to have it, but we must safeguard this resource and adopt a more responsible attitude towards it,” stated Milijana Abramović, coordinator of the “Vidrovanka” campaign from Nikšić’s Vodovod.
This local initiative, which coincides with World Water Day, is being executed by DOO Vodovod i kanalizacija in collaboration with the NGOs “Ekopatriotism” and “Optimists.” Together, preschool children from the “Kosovka djevojka” educational unit distributed drinking water in eco-friendly aluminum bottles adorned with the campaign’s slogan in the city square. The children also created drawings and wrote messages advocating for conscious use of drinking water and promoting environmental awareness.
“Thanks to our initiative, we are pleased to have connected with others who share our views on the significance of drinking water as an invaluable natural resource, not only for Nikšić but for all of Montenegro. We have a duty to preserve it for present and future generations. This is our moral and social obligation,” added Abramović.
She emphasized the importance of including institutions, NGOs, and children in the campaign.
“The drinking water in Nikšić is of excellent quality, which is a rarity in many countries. It is crucial for us to be more aware of this fact and manage this resource responsibly. The core objective of the campaign is to cultivate greater environmental consciousness and to encourage the mindful use of drinking water. The children conveyed this beautifully through their message: ‘Every drop of change is important,'” Abramović noted.
According to Boško Milović from the NGO “Optimisti,” one of the campaign’s objectives is to encourage the citizens of Nikšić to “rely more on tap water and reduce their reliance on bottled water.”
“We will see if these bottles are utilized properly. I hope this initiative can kickstart the movement towards better water preservation, so we won’t have to worry about losing our most vital resource,” Milović remarked.
“Ecopatriotism” has always highlighted the importance of water since its inception, advocating for the protection of rivers like Gračanica, and now shifting focus to drinking water itself.
“We readily embraced this project to underscore the critical importance of water, not just for people, but for all forms of life on this planet. Our goal is to enhance awareness, encouraging individuals to avoid wasting water and to recognize that water is invaluable,” emphasized Ivana Čogurić from “Ekopatriotizma”.
