“Numerous Technical Errors, but Victory is the Top Priority”

The Montenegrin women’s handball team triumphed over the Turkish national team in Rize today with a score of 30:28, securing the top position in the European Championship qualifiers with one round still remaining.

The “Lionesses” performed well in Turkey, yet they committed several technical errors that need addressing before the Olympic Games qualifications begin.

“I anticipated a challenging match given the positive atmosphere. The girls were somewhat overwhelmed in the first half, feeling pressured to finish quickly and transition smoothly. We recorded nine technical mistakes in the first half and six in the second, which is excessive for today’s game. We’ll work on these issues. The most important thing is the victory, and fortunately, everyone is healthy. We made a lot of rotations. Let’s move forward,” stated coach Bojana Popović post-match.

The coach noted the limited preparation time for this match due to the “Lionesses” gathering recently.

“These are exceedingly tough matches. We come together for just one day and immediately hit the road. We try to manage it through communication, but we must navigate situations like today. Defensive setups such as 6-0 and 5-1, as well as transitional plays, were particularly problematic today. I believe this stems from a lack of familiarity and some miscommunication due to not being together for some time. However, I’m confident that in a few days, we will resolve these issues more effectively,” Popović added.

On Sunday (18), Montenegro will face Bulgaria in the final round of qualifications in Podgorica.

“I want us to finish in the best possible way, ensuring we remain healthy even after that game, and head to Ulm with the Angels,” Bojana Popović remarked.

Mugoša: We had numerous technical errors; Despotović: I believe we’re already en route to Germany

Dijana Mugoša stood out as the top scorer for the “Lionesses,” netting nine goals.

“Securing two points is our primary objective, and that’s what matters most. This game served us well in preparing for next week. Our focus and readiness will be crucial for upcoming matches. While we encountered many technical mistakes that we’re not typically accustomed to, it’s better they occur now than later. We’re progressing step by step toward what truly matters,” commented Dijana Mugoša.

Jelena Despotović expressed that she and her teammates might already have one foot in Ulm.

“The goal was achieved; gaining the two points is crucial. It wasn’t an easy match, and the crowd was fantastic. It was clear we haven’t played together in a while. Perhaps our thoughts are on Germany already. The start was rocky, and the defense was lacking, but I hope we will be prepared when it truly counts,” said the Budućnost handball player.

With a match against Bulgaria remaining in the European Championship qualifiers, the team will then shift focus to prepare for the Olympic Games qualifications. In Ulm, the “Lavice” will face Paraguay, Slovenia, and Germany.

“We are committed to doing our best. We’ll utilize this period leading up to the qualifications to refine our skills, enhance our performance, and aim for success in Ulm,” Jelena Despotović concluded.
