On Thursday, Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović will officiate the opening of a street named after Petar Orahovac in Lovech, Bulgaria.

The President’s Office shared that this event honors the remarkable humanist, physician, and politician whose contributions have made a lasting impact on both Bulgarian and Montenegrin history.

Born in 1857 in the village of Orahovo in Kuči, Petar Orahovac took part in the Herzegovinian uprising from 1875 to 1878. He completed his medical education in Moscow in 1883. After returning to Montenegro, he worked in Bar and Ulcinj, but in 1884, he relocated to Bulgaria, where he significantly advanced the Bulgarian healthcare system.

As a founding member of the Bulgarian Medical Association, Orahovac made notable improvements to public health in Bulgaria, exemplifying a strong commitment to the medical field. He was also active in Bulgarian politics, serving as the President of the Bulgarian National Assembly from 1910 to 1911—an exceptional role for a foreigner.

“The inauguration of the street in Lovech commemorating his name symbolizes appreciation for his work and accomplishments that transcend national boundaries, reminding us of the shared history and values that unite Montenegro and Bulgaria. This occasion reaffirms the excellent and cordial relations between our two countries, emphasizing trust and partnership. Additionally, Lovech is home to the Honorary Consulate of Montenegro in Bulgaria. Dr. Petar Orahovac represents a vital link of cooperation and understanding between our nations, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations,” stated the Office of the President of the State.
