The Montenegrin women’s handball team dominated Bulgaria today in “Morača” with a score of 35:17, completing their qualification for the European Championship with a perfect record of six wins.
The Lionesses executed their game plan seamlessly, allowing just six goals in the second half. Coach Bojana Popović used this match to experiment with a mixed lineup. Key players such as Tatjana Brnović, Dijana Mugoša, and Marina Rajčić were rested, while Matea Pletikosić, Itana Grbić, and Ilda Kepić did not see any game time.
“The cycle has come to a close, and matches like these can be tricky. I was concerned about our approach; I highlighted that it needed to be consistent throughout the game. The girls, especially the younger talent, performed excellently. It’s encouraging to see their energy rise to a higher level. These games also allow us to discover new players and explore different scenarios for future actions and years. We ended the cycle on a high note, and most importantly, everyone stayed healthy,” stated Popović post-match.
Looking ahead, the focus shifts to next week’s Olympic Games qualifiers. Montenegro is set to face Paraguay on Thursday in Ulm, competing alongside Slovenia and Germany in their group.
“These tournaments carry significant weight. Every team arrives with the same aspiration—qualifying for the Olympic Games. We need to manage the atmosphere, adrenaline, and tension to perform well in these matches. There’s no need to escalate pressure; our goal is to maintain control. Let’s see how things unfold and ensure everyone stays healthy. Training remains essential, and we’re dedicated. I’m hopeful that we’ll approach Germany with the team we have now. Each game will be a preparation starting with Pravagaj. We aim to acclimate to the venue in that match,” remarked the coach.
Younger players on the handball team seized their opportunity today.
“We remained injury-free and capitalized on every chance that came our way. We fought hard from start to finish—Bulgaria was a formidable opponent, and they executed lengthy attacks. Our defensive performance was commendable. This match served as our final preparation before the challenges ahead,” goalkeeper Anastasija Babović-Vujović commented.
Ulm is on everyone’s mind.
“All three games will pose tough challenges. We have a few days to prepare, and I believe we can compete with all the teams. Slovenia and Germany are strong competitors, but with the right mindset, determination, focus, and character, we can face any team,” Babović-Vujović added.
