This Thursday, the Montenegrin handball team will face Paraguay, followed by matches against Germany and Slovenia over the weekend. These encounters represent the culmination of the players’ aspirations since their last game in Tokyo 2021.
The “Lionesses” have successfully secured victory in their last two qualifying matches for the European Championship. The ultimate goal is to reach the championship event that will be hosted by Hungary, Austria, and Switzerland later this year, but now the focus shifts to these crucial upcoming battles.
Bojana Popović’s squad aims to seize one of the two available tickets to Paris, striving to qualify Montenegro for the Olympic Games for the fourth time through these three matches in Ulm.
“I thrive on challenging matches; that’s when the adrenaline kicks in, and I’m eagerly anticipating the start. I believe my teammates feel the same way,” said Nikola Vukčević, a key pivot on our national team.
Nikolina has rejoined the national team; her impactful return during the recent match against Turkey in Rize was vital for the “Lionesses'” defensive efforts, and she shone with her goal-scoring against Bulgaria last night.
“Given that we’ve pre-qualified for the European Championship, our primary concern is maintaining our health. These matches serve as preparation for what lies ahead, and we are excited—ready for the tournament in Ulm,” Nikolina shared.
She reflected on the opponents in Ulm…
“No opponent should be underestimated… While Paraguay may seem a tad easier, our experience against Turkey has shown that surprises can happen. Nowadays, every team plays competitive handball… We must enter that match fully prepared for Germany, and then Slovenia,” she emphasized.
Tanja Ivanović, the right back for Montenegro, believes the “Lionesses” will face significant challenges in the Danube city.
“Paraguay is a unique team, but we are familiar with them from the World Cup, so we are ready. Slovenia and Germany play a more familiar style of handball that resembles ours. They are undoubtedly tough contenders, and it won’t be an easy feat,” Tanja noted.
Nonetheless…
“I have faith in our team. Time and again, we’ve proven we can compete against anyone; we just need to channel our energy and fighting spirit,” stated the Budućnost handball player.
The anticipated duels in Ulm are fast approaching.
“Time is running short, but we are diligently preparing for each opponent in turn. I’m optimistic everything will fall into place,” concluded Tanja Ivanović.
