Boston Celtics Sold to New Owners for $6.1 Billion
After more than two decades, the basketball powerhouse from Massachusetts has new ownership— the Boston Celtics will be under the management of Symphony Technology Group, replacing the Grusbek family.
According to ESPN’s well-known NBA journalist, Shams Charania, the general partner of Symphony Technology Group, William Chisholm, has reached an agreement to acquire the Boston Celtics for an estimated $6.1 billion.
This marks the largest sale of a sports franchise in North America, surpassing the $6.05 billion sale of the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023, as the same source reports.
Under the ownership of the Grusbek family, the Celtics celebrated championship victories in 2008 and 2024.
Vic Grusbeck and Steve Pagliuca were the leaders of the group that purchased the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million.
Last June, the Grusbek family revealed plans to sell a majority stake in the Boston Celtics by 2024 or 2025, with the remainder of the transactions projected to finish in 2028. They indicated that Vic Grusbeck will stay with the team until the sale concludes in 2028.
The Symphony Technology Group, now at the helm of this storied franchise, is an American private investment firm located in California, founded by William Chisholm in 2002.
The Celtics are a dominant force in American sports, boasting 18 NBA titles, with only the New York Yankees (27 titles) and the Montreal Canadiens (24 titles) ahead of them in terms of championships.
