Introducing a Special Education and Rehabilitation Program at the Faculty of Philosophy in Nikšić
The University of Montenegro, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation, has announced the launch of a new Study Program for Special Education and Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Philosophy in Nikšić.
The primary objective of this program is to train professionals who specialize in the education and rehabilitation of individuals with various disabilities, as stated by the University of Montenegro.
A protest held today by parents of children with autism emphasized the urgent need for a study program that would train staff equipped to support individuals on the autism spectrum.
According to the announcement, a comprehensive study program and qualifications initiative have been developed, laying the groundwork for the accreditation and licensing process.
The proposed program follows the 3+2 year framework and consists of three key modules: Developmental Disabilities and Disorders, Speech and Hearing Impairments and Disorders, and Behavioral Disorders.
“Students will gain the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively work in schools, rehabilitation facilities, and various organizations dedicated to the support and inclusion of individuals with disabilities,” stated the University of Montenegro.
A commission led by the Vice-Rector for Education, Prof. Dr. Veselin Mićanović, has developed a study for the accreditation of the Study Program for Special Education and Rehabilitation in alignment with the current higher education laws under the 3+2 model.
It is anticipated that the accreditation process and the acquisition of a license will be finalized prior to the enrollment deadline for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The new study program has been crafted for accreditation based on a thorough needs analysis within the Montenegrin education system. “The establishment of this study program marks a significant advancement in the development of inclusive education and professional support in Montenegro, addressing contemporary societal needs and aligning with European educational and rehabilitation standards,” the statement concludes.
